Rotating Radio Transients: X-ray observations

چکیده

Rotating RAdio Transients are a new class of neutron stars discovered through the emission of radio bursts. Eleven sources are known up to now, but population studies predict these objects to be more numerous than the normal radio pulsar population. Multiwavelength observations of these peculiar objects are in progress to disentangle their spectral energy distribution, and then study in detail their nature. In this review I report on the current state of the art on these objects, and in particular on the results of new X–ray observations.

A tale of two populations: Rotating Radio Transients and X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars

We highlight similarities between recently discovered Rotating Radio Transients and X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars. In particular, it is shown that X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars have a birthrate comparable to that of Rotating Radio Transients. On the contrary, magnetars have too low a formation rate to account for the bulk of the radio transient population. The consequences of the recent d...

Physical Interpretations of Rotating Radio Transients

Nearly a dozen of Rotating RAdio Transients (RRATs) have been discovered recently. These objects share similar spin parameters with normal radio pulsars but distinguish themselves from normal pulsars by being quiescent most of the time and only becoming radio bright occasionally. We discuss two possible interpretations to the phenomenon. The first model suggests that these objects are pulsars s...

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Theory and Modelling of the Radio Emission from X-ray Transients

The radio emission observed from some X-ray transients (XRTs) complements X-ray and optical observations of these sources, because it originates not from thermal processes but from suprathermal relativistic electrons radiating in a magnetic eld. The theory and modelling of radio emitting XRTs has concentrated, of necessity, on the frequency spectrum and the temporal decay of the radio ux densit...

Multi-wavelength observations of isolated neutron stars

Forty years elapsed since the optical identification of the first isolated neutron star (INS), the Crab pulsar. 25 INSs have been now identified in the optical (O), near-ultraviolet (nUV), or near-infrared (nIR), hereafter UVOIR, including rotation-powered pulsars (RPPs), magnetars, and X-ray-dim INSs (XDINSs), while deep investigations have been carried out for compact central objects (CCOs), ...
